Prevention Is Always Stronger Than a Cure!

Here's Why Routine Dental Check-ups and Cleanings Are Critical

Unfortunately, our teeth can become quite stained and discoloured with every cup of coffee, handful of berries or glass of wine we enjoy. This can contribute to an unattractive or dull-looking smile, and can ultimately lower one's self-esteem. Thankfully, there's a solution to stained-teeth sorrows! And, even better, there's more than one.

How well do you look after your teeth? Maybe you've got a flawless care routine down to a T… or maybe you can admit to struggling a little here and there. When life gets busy, it can be hard to fit in that extra flossing session (we've all been there)! But after too many situations of neglect, your oral health is at risk. Read on to see how you can make preventive dentistry (the practice of looking after your oral health) your best friend!

Friendly Reminders

When taking care at home, be sure to brush at least twice a day for at least 2 minutes (just 120 seconds) at a time. Pay attention to all of your teeth's many surfaces, and be sure to extend the greetings from your brush to those harder-to-reach areas, too! In addition, brush or scrape the tongue… it really is a carpet of bad breath-causing bacteria. Also… don't toss the floss... or the idea of it, rather. Make sure you floss every day, and bring the string below the gum line between each tooth for an effective cleaning.

Achieving a Whole New Level of Cleans

Preventive dentistry doesn't only stop with you, although you are the biggest part of the overall picture. Going for routine dental check-ups and cleanings as necessary (recommended at 3, 6 and 9 month intervals depending on the individual) will help to ensure the health of your mouth. During a typical cleaning, the dentist or dental hygienist will use special dental instruments to scrape off any buildup of bacteria, and will polish the surfaces of the teeth to leave them shiny and smooth. At the end of a cleaning, your dental health professional will answer any questions you may have about at-home oral maintenance, and will happily demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to remind you about how it's done best.

Taking Advantage of Prevention

People of all ages can benefit from preventive dentistry! Properly looking after the health of your gums and teeth at home every day, and regularly going for professional check-ups at the dentist's office, is the surefire way to avoid troubling dental problems.
